The title pretty much says it all. If your looking for a one-stop-shop for free downloads of rare tapes from all across Africa, the internet offers no site better than this. It can be somewhat overwhelming but if you feel like taking a chance, with the upside being exciting foreign sounds, Awesome Tapes From Africa is worth a shot.

World Music from our backyard. Los Angeles based collective, Fool’s Gold,  combines soaring harmonies sung in Hebrew and twisting guitars lines plucked straight out of 1970s Nigeria. The video, shot on a hot LA day, with its bikini babetrons, smiling dog, old timer bros kicking it, and a bouncing sun shade-clad band singing along, feels distinctly LA, despite its far-reaching influences. Plus its guaranteed to bring a smile upon your day.

Amadou and Mariam - Sabali (Welcome To Mali - 2008)

Music from the heart of Mali, forged by an aging blind couple… or a new direction from an eccentric former Britpop star… or maybe both. In a world whose expanses are increasingly diminished and its mysteries revealed just a wikipedia page away, the unlikely upside of our connectivity is revealed. Only today could a collaboration between the blind champions of afro-blues, Amadou and Mariam, and the mind behind Gorillaz, The Good The Bad And The Queen, and former front man of Blur, Damon Albarn, be something so uniquely seperate from each’s distinct styles, yet a high-water mark for each’s already sizable impact on modern music. Truly world music in an age of miracle and wonder.
